Text: Ephesians 4
Dear Brethren,

MEDITATION
1 I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with
which you were called,
2  with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love,
3  endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Ephesians 4:1-3

 

OBSERVATION AND INTERPRETATION

1. Paul’s view of being a prisoner

a) A prisoner of Rome
A technical viewpoint

b) A prisoner of the Lord
A theological truth

c) Paul’s example:

i) Faith
ii) Courage
iii) Strength
iv) Commitment

2. Beseeching

a) An exhortation
b) A strong plea

3. Contents of this beseeching

a) Our calling from God

We must walk worthy

b) Manner of walking worthy

i) Lowliness
ii) Gentleness
iii) Longsuffering (patience)
iv) Bearing with one another in love
v) Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Church
vi) This unity is the work of the Spirit of God
vii) There must be a bond of peace

 

APPLICATION TO LIFE AND MINISTRY

1. Our Calling as Pastors

a) Let us seek to walk worthy of God
b) We must not fail to live up to God’s calling

2. Manner of life

a) This is the focal point
b) Preaching and Teaching are important
c) But our lifestyle is of critical importance

3. Encouragement to each other

a) Let us be an example to our church congregation
b) Let us be a source of blessing by the way we live
c) Let us seek to keep a strong sense of unity of the Spirit
